Taking Photos of the New Bathroom

<center></center>I think one of my favorite projects we finished recently was this little sink for the guest bathroom. I showed some progress shots <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/06/guest-bathroom-sink.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/05/bathroom-reno-progress-and-new-sputnik.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I am SO happy with how this one came together!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_0091.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda016/IMG_0091.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />We've been enjoying the finished and installed sink for a couple weeks now, and I've been so excited to share. The hold up was I didn't have a lens that could capture the whole sink!<br /><br />Lately I've just been photographing projects with my old Canon Rebel XTi DSLR camera. I have a pretty standard EF 50mm f/1:1.8 II lens and a nicer mid-range zoom lens (EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM) that was a bit of a splurge last year. I've been planning to invest in a nicer camera body this year as well as a good wide angle lens.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_0071.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda016/IMG_0071.jpg" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_0070.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda016/IMG_0070.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />Luckily <a href="http://bit.ly/1lWyUSV" target="_blank">Canon</a> reached out about to me about working with them on their new 'Bring It' campaign. They gifted me with a <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_rebel_t5i_18_55mm_is_stm_lens_kit" target="_blank">new EOS Rebel T5i</a> (which has great video capabilities - I was excited about that! Stay tuned for some fun DIY videos!) and their brand-spanking-new wide angle lens, the <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_s_10_18mm_f_4_5_5_6_is_stm" target="_blank">EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM</a>. I was SO excited to try out the new lens on our bathroom sink! Finally a lens that could capture the full space, tight angles and all!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_8074copy.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/IMG_8074copy.jpg" /></div><br />I thought it would be fun to show how different lenses capture the same space. Here's the sink, shot with the new EOS Rebel T5i camera and my old EF 50mm lens. I love 50mm shots. These are such affordable lenses, I think everyone with a DSLR should have one! They're especially handy for portraits and photographing kids. Every shot will be sharp and bright with a 50mm!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo sink50.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda017/sink50.jpg" /></div><br />Here's the same shot, but using my EF 24-105mm lens, zoomed out as far as it will go.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo sinkstock.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda017/sinkstock.jpg" /></div><br />And here's the <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_s_10_18mm_f_4_5_5_6_is_stm" target="_blank">new wide angle lens</a>! Ta-dah!!!! Look at that beauty! What's most impressive to me about this lens, besides how well it does in low-light situations, is that it shows almost no warping. There's none of that fish eye look that sometimes happens with wide angles.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo sinkwide.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda017/sinkwide.jpg" /></div><br />On the other side of the room, we hung two Andrew Wyeth prints. So pretty!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo lenswide1.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda017/lenswide1.jpg" /></div><br />I've never taken a photography class, which makes me really appreciate how user-friendly <a href="http://bit.ly/1lWyUSV" target="_blank">Canon's lenses</a> are! I think it's so cool to see what a difference in perspective there is here between the three lenses!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_0136.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda016/IMG_0136.jpg" /></div><br />I was shocked to learn that the new wide angle lens is less than $300! I don't know how I lived without one for so long.<br /><br />Also, I was surprised at how much I love the new <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_rebel_t5i_18_55mm_is_stm_lens_kit" target="_blank">Rebel T5i camera</a>. There are all sorts of amazing features that make it really easy to shoot in manual or program (P) mode, which is sort of the step between automatic mode and manual. The large display screen makes it so easy to preview how a photo will look with different settings <i>before you take the photo (!)</i>, which takes out a ton of guess work for those of us who are not pros!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_8050.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda016/IMG_8050.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_8048.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda016/IMG_8048.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />One of my favorite features of the Rebel T5i is the amazing touch screen display! With the swipe of my finger I can scroll through my playback and I can zoom in and out, just like on an iPhone.<br /><center></center><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_8064.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda016/IMG_8064.jpg" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Another favorite thing is a setting that releases the shutter and takes a photo when you tap on the LCD screen! Olive Obsession (and a Bathroom Sneak Peek!)

<div style="text-align: center;"><center></center></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">Sometimes I get really excited about a color or a fabric or a style of furniture mostly because it feels really fresh, or at least not too played out. I've been really drawn to shades of olive lately because they look new again to me! The light in this bathroom is very cool - approaching blue. The tile I chose for the floors was also pretty cool, so I knew we could go very warm on the walls and it wouldn't feel off balance.<br /><a name="more"></a></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo Olive6.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda011/Olive6.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">The brass fixtures also help to add back some warmth in the sink and tub areas. Oh, you guys - the sink turned out so well! I can't wait to share this with you soon! We are getting a new wide angle lens since the shot is almost impossible to get without one. The blue is so subtle, and the olive color has plenty of gray in it, so it's not too Army green and not too dark, which I was a little worried about. I was able to round up some inspiration images beforehand that helped me feel better about just going for it. This one, from the (seriously great) book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/030798530X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=030798530X&linkCode=as2&tag=littgreenote-20&linkId=EYECDYZPOLL4UENR" target="_blank">French Accents</a>, really sealed the deal for me though.<img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=littgreenote-20&l=as2&o=1&a=030798530X" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> I love that all the moulding floor to ceiling is the same color! Modernizing Old Cabinet Fronts

<center></center><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_4012.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_4012.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />Our house is full of these country-style 80's cabinets, but I didn't want to have to replace all of them, since they work fine, they just weren't pretty at all.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo dIMG_1543.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/dIMG_1543.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">To start, I carefully measured the fronts of the doors at wherever was the thickest part of the door. The nice people at Home Depot cut down very thin, but super sturdy 1/8" hardboard to the exact sizes I needed. This is the same material I used to add <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2013/08/diy-plank-walls-and-painted-mudroom.html" target="_blank">paneling to the mudroom</a>. It takes paint very well (on the brown side, not the slick white side) and is an easy product to work with because it's so lightweight.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_3726.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_3726.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I used a bit of Liquid Nails Paneling to adhere the hardboard to the cabinet door. I didn't use too much because I wanted the hardboard to sit really flush and tight against the old door.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo cIMG_3731.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/cIMG_3731.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I thought I might have to throw in a few finishing nails to keep everything together, but the Liquid Nails ended up being enough and there was a really tight seal on the edges. It worked surprisingly well!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_3729.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_3729.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">After everything had dried for a full day, we caulked the edges and gave everything a coat of primer and two coats of paint before installing the doors again and adding the hardware from Anthropologie.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo cIMG_3999.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/cIMG_3999.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">It's not perfectly perfect, but it was like $10 of hardboard to update these cabinets and I like them a million times more now!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_3776.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_3776.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />Some of you noticed that my <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/06/kitchen-mini-reno-cabinets.html" target="_blank">kitchen cabinet door fronts</a> had a similar old style. I used this exact process in our kitchen too before adding the corner moulding! Guest Bathroom Sink

Things are moving along with the guest bathroom reno! Since we saved so much money on the <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/04/black-clawfoot-tub.html" target="_blank">clawfoot tub</a> (only $200!) I felt like we could spend just a little more on the sink, so I went to my stone guy (where I bought the <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2013/11/finished-fireplace.html" target="_blank">black limestone</a> surround for my firebox) and looked in his remnant section for something to make a sink out of. I wanted a white marble with really heavy veining, like a statuary marble. I found <a href="http://instagram.com/p/n_WYxXwW9S/" target="_blank">this large remnant slab</a> that I really liked but it was polished and I wanted a honed finish. After finding out the stone was only $10/sq ft I felt like I could afford to have the stone honed, which added only a couple of dollars to the price per square foot. It's White Horn marble and the veining is so pretty!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_4893.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_4893.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />I bought a smallish undermount sink from Signature Hardware. I found a commercial metal worker just on google maps who was willing to take on side jobs. He was such a nice guy (email me if you want his contact info) and he gave me a great price for the sink base and two side table bases. I gave him a really rough sketch and here's what he showed me after a really quick work up using 1" square iron rods. (it's sitting on a brace here)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo cIMG_5221.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/cIMG_5221.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I was mostly checking for shape here and I told him I loved it, but asked for the curve to get shaved down a little to be a little more smooth.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_5223.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_5223.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />Then yesterday I stopped by to check on the new curve and the color. I wanted the sink base to be a dark color to contrast against all the whites in the room. He got the iron a really dark but still industrial feeling black in the upper right corner here below. Just what I was hoping for! And the curve is perfect too. I wanted it to feel a little like hairpin legs. It's hard to see with the shadows, but I think it's going to be just right. :)<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_5228.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_5228.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_5231.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2021/IMG_5231.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />So after the color goes more uniform and black, the metalworker will build some little tabs to help us connect the sink with the base. Also I'm probably going to have to build some sort of french cleat situation to ensure everything stays where it's supposed to on the wall, but it shouldn't be too big of a deal.
